Cascaded H-Bridge multilevel converter technology for MV/HV reactive power compensation, voltage stabilization, flicker suppression and harmonic filtering. Up to 160 MVAr. ≤2 ms response. Designed and manufactured by Forte.
The Forte STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) represents the most advanced reactive power compensation technology available — based on voltage source converter (VSC) architecture using cascaded H-Bridge multilevel topology with high-voltage IGBT modules. Unlike traditional SVC systems that rely on large capacitors and reactors, STATCOM uses power electronics to generate reactive power directly, achieving faster response, smaller footprint and wider operating range.
With response times of ≤2 ms — compared to ≥10 ms for conventional SVC — Forte STATCOM systems are the preferred solution for arc furnaces, steel rolling mills, electrified railways, wind farms and utility substations where rapid voltage regulation and flicker suppression are critical.
Forte STATCOM systems are available in both wind-cooled and water-cooled configurations, with indoor, outdoor and containerized installation options to suit any site requirement.

Next-generation IGBT-based compensation with unmatched speed, flexibility and power density.
Response time of ≤2 ms versus ≥10 ms for traditional SVC. STATCOM can finish the transition from rated capacitive var to rated inductive var in a very short time — ideal for impact load compensation.
STATCOM can restrain voltage flicker to 2:1 in maximum, achieving 5:1 or even higher. Unlike SVC, STATCOM responds fast enough for high-capacity flicker mitigation.
STATCOM can work from rated inductive power to rated capacitive power. Compared with SVC, the operation range is much wider — and can output rated reactive current even under low system voltage.
Not only fast reactive power compensation, but also harmonic filtering, 3-phase unbalance correction and negative sequence current restraining — all in a single system.
SPWM technology generates very low harmonics while compensating load harmonics simultaneously. STATCOM becomes a true multifunctional compensator.
HV capacitors and reactors are no longer necessary. STATCOM installation area is 50% or less of equivalent SVC capacity — critical for space-constrained substations.
Every Forte STATCOM installation consists of four key subsystems working together to deliver fast, precise reactive power compensation.
Houses cascaded H-Bridge power units with IGBT modules. Intensive drawer-type design enables high power density and easy maintenance.
Digital DSP-based controller with HMI workstation. Handles real-time compensation algorithm, protection and SCADA communication.
Wind cooling (forced air with metal fans) or water cooling (ion exchange tank, water tank, standby pump) depending on capacity and site conditions.
Pre-charge and DC bus management system for safe startup and controlled power-up sequence.
STATCOM systems are deployed wherever fast response, wide operating range and compact footprint are essential for MV/HV reactive power compensation.
Primary STATCOM application. Direct connection to EAF bus without converter transformer. Compensates DC components in furnace current for best flicker reduction.
Unsymmetrical industrial loads causing voltage drop, fluctuation and high-order harmonics. STATCOM keeps voltage stable and harmonics low.
Comprehensive power quality management for multiple furnaces, ladle furnaces and rolling operations at the same substation.
Single-phase traction loads cause 3-phase unbalance and negative sequence current. STATCOM is the only effective solution for railway substations.
Grid code compliance, voltage support and reactive power control. Essential for grid interconnection of large wind generation plants.
Voltage regulation, transmission capability improvement and transient stability enhancement for 66/110/220 kV substations.
Stabilize weak system voltage, reduce power loss, increase transmission capacity and improve transient stabilization limit.
Large hoists, draglines and processing equipment with highly variable MV reactive power demand causing voltage dips and fluctuations.
Ball mills, kiln drives and large fans at MV with significant reactive power requirements and voltage stabilization needs.
Large compressor and pump drives at medium voltage. Continuous process environments requiring stable, high-quality power supply.
